When launching an sUAS for commercial purposes, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) necessitates that the pilot has a special approval, commonly referred to as a Part 107 Certificate.
In June 2016, the FAA published new regulations for drone use defined as "Part 107". These Federal Aviation Regulations, or FARs, were the FAA's first official tenets related to commercial drone use. Part 107 requires that a business aquire a Remote Pilot Certificate with an sUAS rating for commercial drone pilots.
A commercial Remote Pilot Certificate or "drone license" enables a commercial entity to receive payment for drone utilization. The motivation behind the automaton permit is to guarantee that the pilot knows about and securely complies with the existing FAA drone flight regulations.
Under the new drone laws, most sUAS flights for commercial purposes are regulated by Part 107.
So long as your flights meet those FAA drone regulations under Part 107 and you have a Remote Pilot Certificate with a sUAS rating for commercial use, you are ready to fly your sUAS!
Before the new regulations, any pilot flying a sUAS for business needed to go through the lengthy process of applying for a "333" exemption with the FAA. This exemption could cost anywhere between $500 – $5,000 and commonly took as long as six months to complete.
Also at that time, only pilots who were licensed to fly manned aircraft were allowed to fly drones. Which meant not only were you required to receive the exemption from the FAA; you additionally needed to be a helicopter or airplane pilot.
