With 4 years of utility drone pilot training experience, Captive Drone is the only solution with a long history of success in equipping drone pilots with the skills and experience to be effective in the wire environment. Our instructors’ extensive experience in both the field and the classroom provides insight into what it takes to be successful in the industry.

Our goal is to provide our students with the foundational training to be a successful utility drone pilot. Our training puts you in real world scenarios identifying real anomalies and operating in real conditions at a state of the art utility training facility in Trenton, GA.

Topics Covered

• Remote Pilot Training
• Learn to operate a drone safely and legally in the United States. This training includes preparation for the FAA’s remote pilot license test, hands-on flight training, and an introduction to crew coordination and communication.
• Utility Pilot Training
• Learn the proper inspection methods and risk mitigation techniques to safely and effectively inspect utility structures in the wire environment.
• Inspection Labs
• Practice identifying and documenting real anomalies in the field using the Southeast Lineman Training Center’s facility featuring one of the world’s only Timpson Training Units.

Day 1 - Remote Pilot Training

Airspace

Students will learn the ins-and-outs of the National Airspace System and how to safely navigate U.S. airspace with a drone.

Weather

Understand the impacts of weather on aircraft performance, how to look up and decipher aviation weather reports, and the restrictions imposed by weather.

Regulations

Students will learn and understand FAA regulations regarding the use of drones in the U.S. under 14 CFR part 107.

Loading and Performance

Lean the effects of loading and weather conditions on the performance of drones. Students will be able to apply the knowledge of perforance to safely and effectively plan and fly drone missions.

Day 2 - Remote Pilot Training

Airport Operations

Students will learn how manned aircraft operate in and around airports to understand how drones fit into the complexities of traffic patterns and approach procedures.

Radio Communication Procedures

Learn how to understand aviation radio communications to improve situational awareness when operating in controlled airspace.

Aeronautical Decision-Making

Learn risk mitigation, Crew Resource Management, and the proper decision-making strategies to keep you safe and ensure mission success.

Physiology

Students will learn how drugs, alcohol, the environment, and other factors affect human physiology and effective strategies to prevent impairment before and during flight.

Day 3 - Utility Pilot Training

Wire Environment

The wire environment is the most challenging environment in which we fly. Learn the proper techniques and methodologies to ensure safety and effectively capture data.

Crew Coordination and Phraseology

Working with a crew can pose its own challenges.Learn how to effectively assign tasks and roles and how to successfully manage a drone flight crew. Learn a standard set of words and phrases and how to communicate during flight.

Mission Planning and Preflight Inspection

We discuss and demonstrate how to plan and execute a flight from start to finish.

Practice Test

Take a 60-question practice test to experience what the real test will be like.

Day 4 - Drone Flight Training

Basic Flight Training

Learn the basics of drone controls and gain confidence in the basic maneuvering of unmanned aircraft. Students will complete a variety of introductory flight maneuvers designed to build confidence.

Advanced Flight Training

Learn complex manuevers to prepare for flight in a complex environment. These maneuvers are critical to performing successful utility drone inspections.

Day 5 - Distribution Inspection Training

Distribution Inspection Methods Flight Training

Students will learn how to perform overview and detailed inspections on a variety of distribution structures and how to correctly capture valuable data.

Distribution Labs

Students will put their method training to work by practicing inspections on distribution structures that have simulated anomalies for them to locate and document.

Day 6 - Transmission Inspection Training

Transmission Inspection Methods Flight Training

Students will learn how to perform overview and detailed inspections on a variety of transmission structures and how to correctly capture valuable data.

Transmission Labs

Students will put their method training to work by practicing inspections on transmission systems that have simulated anomalies for them to locate and document.
